Hello, you've reached the Doctor, not at the TARDIS, well, maybe at the TARDIS, won't know until I answer, leave me a message after the TARDIS engine sound if you've got one, just a "please help" is fine although more details would probably be good, whatever you can manage, and I'll get back to you, and maybe save your planet, ta!

[Followed right after by about a second of the sound of TARDIS engines, followed by the thump of its landing.

Eventually, the Doctor opens his door and strolls inside, taking a second to realize he's got company, wrapped up in his own head as he usually is. He stops where he is, clapping his hands together, and blinks, with a sort of whimsical, just slightly mischievous smile as he strolls casually closer.

"Well, Professor Song, hello, t'what do I owe the visit at this hour? Am I getting another Christmas present?"

He glances at the box indicatively, not even trying to hide that he's intrigued. ...whether he's more intrigued by what might be in the box, or by her sort of ambushing him in his room, he's not about to specify openly.

"Well, you didn't think that I was simply going to give you a football, did you?" River just beamed at him with a shrug. The two of them normally didn't exchange gifts, but given that they were here and had been for months it seemed like the thing to do. More than that, River liked to give him presents, and she was hoping that he was going to like this.

Which was why she shimmed down the bed and handed him over the box. When he unwrapped it, the Doctor would find a familiar-looking journal, but one that was brand new. Only a single page contained River's signature scrawl, and that was the inside of the cover. A journal that you can keep for the adventures we'll have here. River didn't add 'for as long as we have them' because that was too melancholy for what she had in mind here.

"Ha, well, I don't know, hadn't had a football of my own, here, hadn't had a football of my own at all, I don't think."

The Doctor raises his eyebrows at the box as she holds it out, but steps nearer to take it, glancing at her before unwrapping and opening it curiously. He pauses for a tick when he sees what's inside, briefly puzzled--then brightens a little, pulling it out.

"Ohh, blimey..."

He takes a second to look it over, collecting himself a little. For just a moment, he'd thought it might have been something even more meaningful, but he peeks inside all the same, finding that note on the inner cover and reading it with a chuckle.

"...that an invitation, then?"

River had considered giving him her actual journal, or rather copying it out for both him and the later Doctor, but who knew if they would have it on them if they disappeared like Rory did. It wasn't something that they could have, so it didn't feel fair to even take that chance. A new journal, however, well that could be well used and taken wherever he went, because she knew that he wasn't like his younger self, and he wouldn't end up putting spoilers inside of it that could be dangerous.

Of course if he did, she could always end up fixing it later.

For now, she just nodded. "Of course it is. Always." And then she snuggled over to him more quickly. "So, my love, what's the matter? You seemed off while you were putting on your Mutt and Jeff act with your later self."

The Doctor's pretty sure they don't really take with them things they shouldn't have--and anyway, he'd know better than to actually read it, in a timeline when he shouldn't.

Still, he grinned at her confirmation, not bothered one bit by her nestling up against his side, but he falters at that question tossed out just as he's off his guard.

"...sorry? ...oh, ah... no, no, it's fine.."

...even when he's not very good at covering it up, he is stubborn, as she knows.
