What's wrong with River? And don't lie and tell me nothing. I may not know her like you and our oldest self but she was the one who came to me before asking me how I got my Tardis - which she decided one of her hearts was the price to pay.

Obviously the... price is still paid, but she doesn't remember it. Guessing she doesn't remember being here before at all. Didn't think it was meant to work like that.

[This sounds the reverse of Jenny but rather than gaining memories from another universe - the ones from here were lost. Obviously, memory loss doesn't sit well, with The Doctor but - there's a deep breath]

Maybe it's for the best she doesn't remember being here; I'm sure Rose most have put River through some sort of special Hell once Rose found out River was my wife.

[Ten pops his mouth] But that begs the question; how to explain her lost heart.

...yeah... maybe.

[The Doctor smiles wryly to himself (and to himself!) at the suggestion that it's for the best--it does give Rose a chance to start afresh with River.

...whether she'll avail herself of it or stubbornly jump down the same hole all over again, though, is hard to guess when it comes to Rose.]

Anyway, don't worry about it, I'll take care of it.

[He has a guess or two about what he might have lost--besides the obvious, and the not-so-obvious that his younger self already knows about firsthand--but only a guess or two.]

...yeah, well, y'know how it is, not the first time.

[Which is both honest and an effective dodge without any explicit evasiveness. After all, there are a lot of things they've lost, over the centuries. Very few things that could happen to them would be for the first time.]
